The HartofHope was 11 year old Isaiah Mechanic’s inspiration on Christmas 2013. As he looked over his presents on that cold winter day, he realized that there were many kids and adults that weren’t as lucky as he was. They didn’t have a warm and happy home of their own. So, he decided that he was going to help the homeless in his community. After discussing his concerns with his mother, they made arrangements to visit a local shelter in order to get a better understanding of the local homeless situation. Isaiah wanted to find out what he could do to help. It didn’t matter that he was only 11 years old, he wanted to do something positive. There he met and talked with many of the residents and discovered that they were much like him and his family. They had just encountered some very hard times. For example, one of the ladies had not been able to find another job after having been laid off. She lost everything and ended up homeless. Every day she leaves the shelter and looks for work and despite everything, still dreams of using her cooking and artistic abilities to someday open a café. Another young man escaped a violent home life by living on the street. Now, with the support of the shelter, he is successfully attending college. One man ended up on the streets because of his addiction to drugs. His desire to get and stay clean has been supported by the shelter and he is working hard to get back on his feet. Isaiah also created a Facebook page for HartofHope (please go on line and take a look). Here, he explains his mission to help the homeless by sharing the stories of those he met at local shelters. He also posts information and pictures showing the plight of the homeless. please check out Isaiah’s Facebook page and watch his video.
